“Wishing you a sweet New Year! High Holidays Lands in Rochester, MN!”
Celebrate Rosh Hashanah–Jewish New Year–with Jewish Pride, Community and Unity
at Chabad of Southern Minnesota’s High Holiday Services

Rochester, MN - Together, the holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the High Holy Days of the Jewish year. Both take place in the coming days. Rosh Hashanah is a time that Jews pray for a good year ahead for all of humanity.

Beginning in 1953 the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, the most influential rabbi in modern history, who is credited with orchestrating a post Holocaust Jewish renaissance, launched a campaign encouraging every Jew to hear the sounding of the shofar, at synagogue or beyond.

The two-day holiday of Rosh Hashanah is the head of the Jewish year, the time when G‑d reinvests Himself in creation as we crown Him king of the universe through prayer, shofar blasts, and celebration. The beginning of High Holiday times has kicked off the celebrations at Chabad of Southern Minnesota starting with our CKIDS Rosh Hashanah Airline Event, Wednesday, September 25th 2024. This engaging event will take children on a high-flying journey with festive activities and creative fun. With the theme “Jetting into a Sweet New Year,” the event emphasizes the essence of Rosh Hashanah: new beginnings and fresh starts.

Chabad-Lubavitch — today, the world’s largest and fast growing Jewish organization — has for decades championed the belief that Judaism belongs to every Jew, and it should be accessible to all. By embodying this ethos, Chabad has made High Holiday services available in the evening by hosting our Rosh Hashanah Community Dinner on October 2nd, 2024.

Chabad of Southern Minnesota will also be bringing the sounds and observances of the holiday by blowing the shofar, a central observance of the holiday. Shofar in the Park will take place on Thursday, October 3rd in Kutzky Park of Rochester, MN.

Other highlights include interactive and spirited services with songs and crowd participation; inspiring sermons; and community meals with all the traditional holiday staples, including apples dipped in honey and other sweet foods. As we take off into the new year, we celebrate this special time by making meaningful resolutions and hoping for a year filled with sweetness and growth.

Shanah Tovah! (“A good year!”)
Yom Tov! (“Have a good holy day!)

What is the holiday of Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur?
Rosh Hashanah ,the Jewish new year, begins this year at sundown on Wednesday, October 2nd and continues through nightfall on Friday, October 4th. Literally meaning “head of the year,” the two-day holiday commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday. The shofar is the central ritual of the Rosh Hashanah synagogue service. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the Jewish year. It concludes the 10 Days of Awe. The day is devoted to repentance for sins that were committed during the previous year. It begins on the evening of Friday, October 11th, and ends on the evening of Saturday, October 12. At the conclusion of Yom Kippur, there is a joyous celebration and a breaking of the fast.
