This year marks the 84th year Pine Island celebrates the Cheese Festival. The city once was a major cheese making community with 30-40 small cheese factories. The weekend event in early June is known as the opening festival of the summer in Southeast Minnesota. Featured activities include a carnival, upwards of 70 craft booths, a good selection of food vendors, wine and cheese tasting gala, Native American culture, live music, and numerous other activities related to the event scheduled throughout the festival weekend. The festivities culminate in a grand parade down Main Street on Sunday.
